Jenny Sharaf, a recent MFA graduate of Mills College, deconstructs the mythology of the California girl, questioning the role of the female artist in the process. Sharaf’s practice is a study in the rush of rushing, trusting her gut to create works that ooze a fast-paced energy similar to flipping through reality TV shows on a melting television. Using pop starlets and female flesh like paint colors to be layered and juxtaposed, Sharaf explores the depth of the surface as well as its seductive beauty. Born and raised in Los Angeles, her early influences span from John Baldessari to Angelyne. For this exhibition, she will be showing an installation of pour paintings that point to surfer culture and summer daydreams in a language of psychedelic-nouveau.

Gina Tuzzi is a currently living and working in Northern California, spending her days as a painting professor at Humboldt State University. Her practice, which spans painting, drawing and sculpture, is inspired largely by counter culture ideologies and a romanticized neo-bohemian aesthetic. Tuzzi appropriates symbols and icons from popular love songs, spiritual divination, pop culture, familial history and an intimate personal narrative. Gina received her M.F.A. from Mills College and is a Libra, dream-weaver and a dedicated cult follower of all-things California. The day she was born, Mark Richards was the world champion of surfing and Jack & Diane was the number one song on the radio.
